Battles in the Dark Book 1 by Kimberley Clark

Kira, a huntress plagued by dreams of fire and pain has worked tirelessly to rid her city of the scourge that has nearly destroyed it…nostvores, mythlend creatures with dark and vast appetites for blood and sex. She does this not only because they had killed so many people in her life, but also because she has an edge that no other human had…she has their abilities. The problem was, these abilities were killing her and she feared time was no longer on her side.

So the moment she found out that Darius, a nostvore leader was threatening to awaken an indestructible species to help him enslave all humans and mythlends, and that she may be the key to his plan, she knew her only choice was to risk her life with the little time that she had left and join her enemy to find out why, and to make sure his plan failed.

If that wasn’t dangerous enough, the more time she spends with the Vanatre nostvore Emmerich, and the mooran Kuron, who she brings with her for protection, the less she wants to kill them. Instead, she feels an unexplainable attraction towards them both, and she fears surrendering to such desire with either is a deadly game to play, for she would not only be risking her life, but quite possibly her heart.

This book is well written and I had good time reading through the whole book. There are lots of action and it was easy to follow with what is going on in the book. I love the female character, Kira she is strong and being human with all the special powers. All the other characters are a fun to follow and read as well. I enjoyed reading the interaction between Kira and Emmerich, they have emotional bond they is hard to break since she is a human and he is not and toward the end he tried his hardest to get Kira out of danger.  I feel he is really in love with her.  The fighting scene was well written. I can’t wait for the second book to come out. I highly recommend this action packed book. It is a good read. I am looking forward to read Book 2 from this author.

There are six stories by six authors which make up the tales in this paranormal/fantasy anthology. I enjoyed reading this book, and can't go into the details of each story. One. I hate giving too much away. And, two. This would be a really long review.

Maronda’s Quest by Christy Thomas A fast paced story, with a great heroine.

Mexmur, the Huntress by Anna Simpson  Secrets to be revealed.

Entrance of Lost Souls by Echo Shea Darker tale with great action.

Where Once were Hearts by Havva Murat Gothic style and one of my favorites in this anthology.

Ordinary World by Laurie Treacy A sweeter romance.

The Lunatic Queen by Michael Siciliano Action and another one of my favorites in this anthology.

Each story is different from the other, but all have the same portal theme. With vivid worlds, interesting characters, romance, action, dragons, queens, and portals into those differing worlds, I can safely say there’s probably something in this book to appeal to the fantasy lovers out there. A recommended read!

First, I want to say thank you to the author, Ms. St. James for making my last official book review such a great one. I’m retiring from the review business, hanging up the old reviewer hat as it were, and this is my last hurrah. I’m happy to have been able to read and review so many wonderful books over the years, and I’m thrilled to be able to go out into that good night on a good note.

I had the pleasure of listening to The Good Sister: Part One. The first part of this two book story about Trinity, and I loved book one. Let me say, I loved book two even more. The Good Sister: Part Two has Trinity making a huge decision for her life, and then once she has made it, she moves forward full force. In the first book we start to see Trinity blossom. In the second and last book, we see her turn into a full blown exquisite bloom.

The world building and depth of the characters are extraordinary. The narration is done to perfection. I chuckled. I cried. I found myself getting a little hot because the sex is scorching! Trinity and Lord Archer are fantastic together, and Reid? Well Reid gave me a heartbreaking moment. The Good Sister: Part Two also has some surprises along the way, with an extra tense, tear inducing moment near the end.

Without giving the book away, I’ll say Trinity finally finds true happiness and love, and her own happily ever after. Well done, Ms. Saint James.

Intervention by Mia Kerick

Picture
As a musician at the popular college café Coed Joe's, high school senior Kai Manter is never lacking for male attention. Out, proud, free-spirited, and sexually aware, Kai sets his sights on his darkly Gothic and undeniably bad-tempered coworker, Jamie Arlotta, a freshman at the local arts university. Sporting long hair and alluring hippie style, Kai expects his interest will be reciprocated, with satisfying sex as the end goal. That's what usually happens. But Jamie's lessons in life have been harsher. Having been sexually abused by his older stepbrother for several years, Jamie has grown an impenetrable outer shell meant to keep the world at a safe distance.

Kai is angry at first when he takes the brunt of Jamie's bad temper, but after Kai accidentally discovers the abuse Jamie has suffered, he wants to fix things. Kai's plan is based on what he knows best - music - and he stages a "musical intervention" to let Jamie know he's not alone and things can get better. When Jamie's perspective changes and he emerges from his shell, Kai changes, too, gaining a whole new understanding of what sex can be when love is there too.

In Intervention we are introduced to Kai, a senior in high school who’s into himself, his music, and other guys. He’s never had a serious relationship, and really isn’t interested in one. Along comes Jamie, a dark, unfriendly, artistic type who works in the café where Kai performs, and Kai finds himself being drawn to Jamie. As the story unfolds, Kai finds out more about Jamie and the abusive past which still plagues him. And since Jamie isn’t all that into letting people into his life, let alone going to except help from someone, Kai intends to make progress into a friendship by using his music to say all the things he can’t say to Jamie in person. Could it be that Kai is interested in more than just a sexual tryst?

This was an interesting, heart wrenching story about trust, overcoming abuse, building relationships that go deeper than sex, and growing up. The idea of using music to convey your thoughts and to say all the things you want to say but can’t in the hopes that the person listening will get the messages was clever. And since the musical intervention is a major part of the plot, you can expect numerous musical titles to be given throughout the story. That can be a good thing and/or a bad one. For those who consider themselves a music aficionado of many different genres, you will probably get what is being “said.” For those who are not so musically proficient, you might not get the impact or the emotion of what is being musically said.

Overall, I enjoyed listening to Intervention and felt the narration was excellent. The author also did a good job of building that bold yet awkward teenage world as seen through the eyes of a young man who is figuring out what it is like to truly love someone.

Bear Heart is an erotic fairy tale about love, loss, trickery, past mistakes, regrets, longing, acceptance, and soul mates.

Simon, a human soldier in his past life, looses whom he believed to be his soul mate to another man. This revelation comes when he finally makes it home from war to his love, only to be faced with her treachery. The woman he loved, whom he thought would wait for him, didn’t.

Angry and distraught, Simon falls into the arms of a beautiful temptress who tells him she can help him gain his revenge on the man who stole his woman away. But wait. She’s too good to be true. What she offers him is too good to be true, and he finds himself cursed by the woman (witch) who said she would help him.

Centuries later, he meets another witch who brings his past and his mistrust to the surface. He’d grown to believe he deserves to be a recluse from society and deserves the curse upon him. Can he trust another witch? Does he want to? Well here’s the thing. The little witch may be able to help him gain what he desperately wants now. The beautiful Margaret. The problem? The past may never allow him to find happiness with his true soul mate.

I enjoyed reading this story and believe readers of paranormal romance will too.
