Book One Cassie Scot: Paranormal Detective

Cassie Scot is the ungifted daughter of powerful sorcerers, born between worlds but belonging to neither. At 21, all she wants is to find a place for herself, but earning a living as a private investigator in the shadow of her family’s reputation isn’t easy. When she is pulled into a paranormal investigation,
and tempted by a powerful and handsome sorcerer, she will have to
decide where she truly belongs.

Excerpt:

My parents think the longer the name, the more powerful the sorcerer, so they named me Cassandra Morgan Ursula Margaret Scot. You can call me Cassie.

I've been called a lot of things in my life: normal, ordinary, and even a disappointment. After the Harry Potter books came out, a couple of people called me a squib. Since I haven't read them, I have to assume it's a compliment.

Personally, I prefer normal, which is why the sign on my office door reads: Cassie Scot, Normal
Detective.

You have to understand that around here, when your last name is Scot, people are easily confused. Not only are my parents powerful practitioners, but I have six talented brothers and sisters. Plus, my family hasn't always been known for its subtlety. When weird stuff happens around here, the people who are willing to believe in magic are prone to suspect the Scots.

The day I opened for business I got a call from an old woman who swore her cat was possessed by the devil. She also swore she'd read my web site, which clearly stated the types of work I did and did not do. Exorcisms were on the No list, and while I hadn't specified pet exorcisms, I would have thought it was implicit.

Book Two Secrets and Lies

Cassie Scot, still stinging from her parents’ betrayal, wants out of the magical world. But it isn’t letting her go. Her family is falling apart and despite everything, it looks like she may be the only one who can save them.

To complicate matters, Cassie owes Evan her life, making it
difficult for her to deny him anything he really wants. And he wants her. Sparks fly when they team up to find two girls missing from summer camp, but long-buried secrets may ruin their hopes for happiness.

Excerpt:

The door opened with a jingle, and something in the air told me my day had just gone from bad to worse.

“Edward,” Victor said, as if greeting an old friend.

I faced my former father for the first time since he had announced his intention to disown me. He looked just as he always had, with straight dark hair, brown eyes, a long, angular face, and a wide, curving mouth– curving downward into a frown, that is.

If Victor was the last person I had expected to see in the diner that morning, then my former father was the last person I wanted to see. Even now, with Victor explaining my part in his unusual scheme for revenge, I didn't want my former father nearby. I didn't want his help. I only hoped Nicolas and Juliana hadn't broken their promise and told him about the life debt, or I would never hear the end of it.

The air crackled with visible tension. Sparks of shimmering red fire danced around my father's head. Behind the counter, Mrs. Meyers twisted her hands together anxiously, as if afraid her diner might burn down. Her fears were not unjustified.

I stepped boldly between them, facing my father. “What are you doing here?”

“We need to talk,” he said.

“I have nothing to say to you. You disowned me, remember?”

The color seemed to drain from his face as he stared past me, at his oldest enemy.

Victor raised his water glass in a mock toast. “I've known for some time. If it makes you feel any worse, so does everyone else in town who hasn't been asleep for a week. Or at least, they
guess.”

“I don't care what you think you know. Stay away from my daughter.” With that, he grabbed my arm with a hand hot enough to leave a reddened imprint on my skin, and dragged me through the kitchen to the employee room at the back. Only then did he release my injured forearm.

After eight years, Hailey is back in Caseville Michigan. Just months after her mother’s death, her siblings want to put their father in a nursing home and rent out the family farm. After high school, Nate Jenkins planned to leave small town behind, but life dealt him a different hand of cards to play. He’s now back in Caseville, raising his daughter, and running his family’s diner. His daughter’s speech disorder has been improved by therapeutic horse riding and if he can lease the old Lambert farm, he can get her a horse of her own. Excerpt:

Only when she heard the bell above the door ring out, was she able to unclench her fists and let out the breath that had tightened her chest. She’d seen Nate lingering around the edge of the counter with her plate of pancakes in hand but didn’t want him to approach her now.

She really didn’t have it in her to deal with him.

He came forward anyway, and set the plate in front of her. After a hesitation, he asked, “Can I sit for a minute?”

Her eyes fluttered closed, but she gestured to the chair. She heard it scrape against the old worn tile and could feel him just inches away from her.

“I’m sorry your dad’s health is on the decline. I’ve always really liked him. It stinks, you know.”

She took a deep breath; maybe they could talk as old friends and ignore the complications of the night they’d spent together. “I don’t think he’s that bad. Jake and Kelly are overreacting.”

He twisted his hands on his lap. “I can see how you would think that. Some days when I see him, he’s sharp as nails. Others….”

Her phone vibrated against the table. The habit to check the ID won out against the desire meet Nate’s stare. An eight-hundred number flashed, twisting Hailey’s stomach into knots. Another bill collector wanting to take the money she was trying to stretch just a little further, hoping to get through a few more weeks. She hit the button to ignore the call.

“I overheard what you said about your dad wanting the property to stay the same,” Nate said. “I’ll take real good care of the place and won’t change a thing. I love that farm the way it is.”

That brought her attention back. “What are you talking about?”

“I’ve been talking to Jake about renting the house.”

She took in his deep brown eyes and almost black hair. It was cropped short like he was trying to beat-the-heat, even if the average temperature this week was somewhere around ten degrees. Much shorter than he wore it in high school. The neatly trimmed beard and mustache were new too.

He looked older. More settled.

How ironic.

They’d both thought this small town would smother them back then.

For a fleeting moment it comforted her to picture Nate cooking in her family’s kitchen, and then she realized it wouldn’t be her house anymore. She’d be on the outside looking in.“It feels like everything is being taken away from me.”

His body stiffened as he pulled back. “It’s not like I’m stealing it. I’m going to pay you for it.”

“This isn’t about money!”

“Then what is it about?”

She reached for her purse and fumbled for her wallet with trembling hands. “Everyone seems to think that just because I don’t live here, I don’t have a voice, but you’re all wrong.” She threw a twenty-dollar bill on the table. “I didn’t leave the planet, I moved to New York. I didn’t abandon my family, but it feels like
they think so. I’m sick of being treated like an outside in my hometown, in my family home, in my own life.”

She stood and tried to turn, but he grabbed her wrist. Looking back would weaken her resolve—Nate had always had that effect on her—but she did it anyway.

“Please, it would mean a lot to Lori…and me.”

His daughter. The child he’d had with someone else. She couldn’t stand the thought of the two of them in her living room without her.

Why did it hurt so much?

It wasn’t as if he left her. She’d pursued and claimed the future she’d always wanted.

Hadn’t she?

If everything she’d attained had been all she ever wanted, why was it tearing her in two to know Nate had gone on with his life without her? It wasn’t as if she’d expected he wouldn’t. She should be happy he was settled. Instead, it made her long for that place next to him even more.

A lump formed in her throat, making speech impossible. Instead, she headed for the door.

“That’s right, Hailey. Run away. It’s what you do best!”

His words stopped her, and she twisted back. “I what?”

“Run. Away. When the pieces of your life don’t come together like a neat little puzzle, you scatter them all around you and stomp out of the room.”

She bristled at the venom in his voice. “That’s not what happened.”

“Oh, no. You handled it so well, just breezed out of town with no concern for those you left behind.”

They weren’t talking about her father or her house anymore. This was about how she’d reacted eight years ago, when the feelings got too real.

Just as they were now.

“I care, dammit!” She let out a long exhale. “I always have.”

Contemporary New Adult Novel
From Sunshine Press, 266 pages

Abigail Orson has a problem. A love problem to be precise; and she has absolutely no idea how to go about fixing it.

For years now, she has been chasing her best friend’s brother—demanding things from
him that he’s never wanted to give. For one? A real relationship that surpasses well beyond that dreaded ‘just friends’ zone. You see, David Anderson is her
idea of perfection to a T. The one and only guy who has ever had the ability to make her heart beat faster; make her toes curl with the simple blink of his
long, girly lashes. But David is also a recovering amputee, and the only thing he really wants from Abigail is to be left alone. Abigail is a fighter though, and losing the one guy who has ruined her for every other is no longer an option.

A guy with one leg who has lost his motivation to live—to love—to actually be a
man. David believes he’s a waste of space. If only the beautiful girl of his
unattainable dreams would get that through her perfect, blonde, stubborn head!
He’s not the right guy for Abigail. He’ll never be worthy of what she deserves.
However, staying away is almost impossible, especially when he’s just as in love
with her as she is with him. But Abigail has a life ahead of her, one that’s
definitely livable without a nineteen–year–old gimp like him holding her down.
What makes her want to stick around is beyond questionable to David’s
mind.

Choices will be made. Lines will be drawn. And together, they will face challenges that
nobody saw coming. David and Abigail may have had almost fourteen years to fall
in love, but the thing is, timing and love have never exactly worked in their
favor.

It has been years in the making, and definitely A Long Time Coming for David and
Abigail. Let’s hope they don’t screw it up before they actually have the chance
to get it right…

Excerpt :

She spun around, nibbling on her lip, grabbing both of
his hands as she pulled him slowly along with her. Her eyes were so focused and shiny that he barely remembered his own name, let alone what he was about to say.

“No crutches, David.”

They made it to the edge of the floor, just as the tempo of the music slowed, to that of a seductive, rhythmic beat. She pulled his hands towards her, and he took that non–verbal command, wrapping his arms around her waist. His fingers knew just what to do, settling into the curves of her body right above her perfect ass. Those damn traitorous body parts had a mind of their own.

“I won’t let you fall…” she whispered in his ear, running her fingers through the back of his hair like a vixen who he wanted to steal away forever, only, though, so he could lock her up with him in the backseat of her car again.

Shit …it wasn’t the fear of falling that worried him. Oh no…it was the fear of never wanting to let her go again.

CHAPTER ONE

Lost in Texas

Austin, Texas, 2012

A couple dozen stars and the eye of a yellow moon pierce light through a sky filled with smoke. I look out the broken window to the ground below. Crumpled in the weeds is a lifeless body with red-flecked eyes, a bushy mustache, and sweet smile.

Vapor seeps into the room. I can barely breathe. Ben wraps his arms around me as I weep. Denise lies in a catatonic state perched on the bed. Why is she only wearing her bra and
panties?

Chris stumbles inside the room. His eyes glow like diamonds. He cranes his head out the window. “We gotta do something, man.”

“I’ll call for an ambulance,” I say.

Ben gulps,“That’s not a good idea.”

“We have to,” I insist. “For Godsakes.”

He’s dead, Laila,” Chris says.

Tears sting my eyes.

WITH A JOLT, I awake whimpering. The nightmare has infested my dreams for years. It may be time to see a shrink.

The anxiety subsides when my husband Eduardo arrives with a cappuccino and the morning paper. “Are you okay? It sounded like you were crying.”

I clear my throat. “No, no, I’m fine. Just a dream, I guess.” I’ve never discussed these recurring nightmares with him. Eduardo’s got his own problems. He was recently laid off in a corporate downsize and refuses to talk about it. There’s lots of tension in our home right now.
Maybe we should both see a shrink.

Questions:

How  long have you been an author?

I’ve been writing since high school, but I’ve been a published author since 2011 –
not long really. I’m still a bit of a newbie.

Have there been any surprises along the way?

Life, and writing, for that matter, is always full of surprises. If I am not being surprised by publishing houses and readers, I am being surprised by my muse, or my imagination. I thought many aspects of being a writer would be harder, and even more I thought would be easier. You definitely have to be adaptive in this business.

Why this story? What was your inspiration to write it?

This story was originally born as part of Evernight Publishing’s Vanilla-Free Christmas anthology. I wanted to write something that highlighted the romantic aspects of a BDSM relationship – hence Faith and Richard were born. Once their first story, Faith’s Gift released, I had a few requests from readers asking for more of Richard – the hunky Dom hero of the story. Never one to keep the ladies
from a good, demanding Dom, I wrote A LEAP OF FAITH as the second installment of
their tale, and the Roses and Thorns series was born. There is definitely more to come from Richard Halstead and his lovely submissive, Faith Daniels… not to mention some of their lifestyle friends…

What was your favorite part of the book to write?

My favorite part of the book is probably also the most controversial – the pet play scene. I have always had a weakness for this sort of BDSM play, so I really wanted to highlight some of that in this story. I found the whole thing incredibly erotic and romantic. But, being it is a different sort of BDSM play than many are used to reading about or experiencing, it may not work as well for some readers.

Is there a message you want your readers to take away from this book?

I think my big message in any of my stories (I write mostly BDSM erotic romance) is there is an innate romantic nature to a D/s relationship that so many miss. With the influx of BDSM themes tales of late, I really wanted to write something that was genuine to the lifestyle and highlighted just how
wonderfully romantic it can be – even if you are into “strange” fetishes or pain.

Do you have any other upcoming releases or projects you would like to talk about?

I am working on the next story in the Roses and Thorns series now and hope to have the next one released before March, and I also have a naughty little fairy tale I am working on rather heavily at the moment. But, one thing I have learned from my muse… anything can happen at any time. Who knows what this wicked imagination will come up with next.

Where can readers find you?

I left a ton of links below my Bio. As you can tell by the number of possible ways to get in touch, I can be a bit of an internet junkie.

Fun Questions:

Who is on your "to be read" shelf?

Not only do I write it, but I love reading erotic fiction. My TBR pile is HUGE, but I am hoping to jump into the latest releases of some of my “go to” authors – DC Stone, Sandra Bunino, Lila Shaw and Doris O’Connor (ironically all fellow Evernight Publishing authors)

What are you reading now?

I’m finishing up a review read -- the latest release of my friend, (and a fantastic author) Stephanie Lawton. Her latest, SHELF LIFE, released on December 3rd. Really enjoying it so far.

If you could only pick one book from your childhood to preserve for others to read, what would it be?

Such a  tough choice…. I guess it depends on the age… If I was still in Elementary school – Where the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak. If I were a bit older – The Lion, The Witch and The
Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. Both just amazing authors and stories that shaped who I am today.

How do you find your muse?

Im not entirely sure. I think he found me in a gutter someplace and felt sorry for me.

Where is your favorite spot to write?

Favorite spot is most definitely the hammock at camp. It’s only open in the summers, so the weather is perfect for lounging, there are plenty of trees for shade, and most of the time I can find a bit of quiet as well.

What book do you think should be made into a movie?

Most of the ones I thought should be movies are… but I’d love to see Jocelyn Adam’s Lila Gray series turned into movies. It is a 3 book series, so it would probably need more than one movie to do the story justice. If you haven’t read them and enjoy Urban Fantasy, I’d highly recommend.

BOOK BLURB FROM A LEAP OF FAITH:

New submissive, Faith Daniels, is completely infatuated with her amazing Dominant, Richard Halstead. So when he sends her a summons via text message a full day before they had plans to meet, she can barely contain her excitement.

But, Richard didn’t just invite her over for a play date. Not this time. He has a proposition for Faith. One that could change the rest of her life.

BOOK EXCERPT:

Faith woke to find herself still nestled tightly against Richard’s warm body and bright, early morning sunshine streaming through the gauzy gray curtains of his bedroom. Not quite ready to face the realities of dawn, she snuggled deeper into the covers, inhaled a lungful of his spicy scent, and pressed her eyes closed.

When she opened them again, her gaze locked with Richard, who sat reclined against the headboard. Had he been watching her sleep? She moved to sit up, cheeks heating.

Richard held her in place, a smile lighting his features. “Where do you think you’re going?”

“Sorry, I was just…”

“Just nothing. I’m not done admiring your beauty quite yet. The black leather collar suits you,
pet.”

A tiny smile tugged at the corner of her lips, but before she could thank him, Richard swiped the blankets away with a quick jerk, exposing her nudity, and letting all the trapped heat out
from under them.

Faith squealed, wrapped her arms around her bared breasts, and rolled into him. Burying her face against his chest, she gave an exaggerated shiver. “Too cold.”

“It’s like eighty degrees in here.”

She peeked up at him.“It was until you let all the heat out of the covers.”

He reached between her arms and tweaked a nipple. “Don’t worry. You’ll warm up while you’re making the coffee. You know where everything is, yes?”

She shivered and glanced across the room at the bedroom door. “It’s so far away.”

His laughter warmed her some. “You’ll survive. I like mine black, one sugar.” He gave her behind a pinch. “Hop to it. The sooner it’s done, the sooner you can return to the warm covers.” A teasing light danced in his eyes. “And, more importantly, me.”

Faith bowed her lips into a pretty pout. “May I have a kiss to keep me warm during my journey to the harsh and frozen realm of ceramic kitchen tiles?”

“How can I refuse you when you ask so nicely, fair maiden?” He gripped her chin, his sweet mouth descending towards hers. A hair’s breath from reaching her parted lips, Richard hesitated. “What do
you say?”

“Please?” she begged.

He captured her mouth with his, heating Faith to her toes in the space of an instant, and scattering her
thoughts like autumn leaves in a brisk wind.

She melted against him, whimpering when his tongue invaded and teased hers, taunting it to join in his erotic dance. Her hands slid up his toned pectorals on their way to encircle his neck.

Richard captured her wrists, stopping her timid advance in its tracks. He drew his hot lips away, leaving her breathless. “Oh, no you don’t. Nice try, little minx. Coffee first. Your reward
comes afterward.”
